A MESSAGE FROM THE JDMF COMMITTEE

The Jake Derrico Memorial Fund was established in 2001 in memory of Mr. and Mrs. Derrico’s son, Jake.  Originally the idea was to sponsor students attending tournaments because of Jake’s love of competition.  You can read more about Jake and his love of the martial arts at any of the schools.  There is a bio hanging on the wall next to his flying sidekick picture. Click here to read Jake's bio.

The JDMF continues to sponsor tournament participation. In addition, the funds are used to pay tuition for students who can benefit from martial arts training, but would otherwise not be able to afford the cost.  The Fund recognizes the need for college scholarships, and awards them to current students of Derrico's Black Belt School.  We hope to continue the expansion of our yearly budget and projects for these worthwhile causes.

Available funds are derived from the fund raisers and generous private donations.  The Board would like to thank those who have made personal donations to the Fund as well as those who bought raffle tickets, T-shirts, or patches in the past.  One of the popular yearly fund raiser events is "Team Sparring" which is usually held in February.  Your continued support is needed.  Plan now to participate and have a lot of fun while contributing to a good cause!

If you have any questions or would like to volunteer or donate, feel free to contact a Board member: Mrs. Johnson, (Abbotsford); Mr. Reis (Marshfield); Mr. Derrico (Medford).

Success Stories

The Jake Derrico Memorial Fund committee announced the recipients of the college scholarships. David Sleznikow and Richard Reis were both awarded a $500 scholarship. Mr. David and Mr. Richie have been with Derrico's Black Belt School for many years. As students and instructors, they are both tremendous assets to our school and very deserving of this scholarship money.

Mr. David, a 3rd degree black belt, will put his scholarship money towards his tuition at UW-Eau Claire where he is currently a senior.  Mr. Richie, a 1st degree black belt, is a freshman at UW-Stevens Point where he will use his scholarship money.  Both are very good students and are required to hold a high grade average as a part of the award. Congratulations and good luck to them in their future education.
